Hi Folks, Ive been logging and sawing off my 100+ acre hardwood forest for about 10 years. I have recently started working with farms to do the same on their wood lots. Now Ive got a list of about 50 land owners that want me to do the same. I am trying to figure out the best way to buy standing timber that is fare to the land owners, myself and the loggers.

Where can I get accurate pricing Would like to move to doing it by the ton verses measuring every tree but that might not work really.

    Thoughts or suggestions greatly appreciated.

From speaking with my local county forester (Roane County TN), my USDA/NRCS Forester, and two commercial land management companies…. They all discouraged “selective” cutting, and said clear cut was best. Then come back 5-10 years later and clear the less desirable species and poorly performing crop saplings. Our local saw mills do publish their price lists, you call them and they will e-mail it out. Now that being said… at this point I am not likely to clear cut my property and would select some trees for harvest as I have already lost 4-5 36″ and greater @BH Hardwoods so money lost already….. My forest, my way, but get some more educated opinions than my non-professional, but land owner (140 acres of forest) points of view……

And tomorrow I am going to my University of Tennessee Forestry Extension seminar on Timber Sales (on July 23)…. I will share what I learn if it has insights on your angle for business
